” Unique” is something I am attracted to. I like things that are different. I recall a moment in the local ” hippy shop” selecting a piece of rose quartz to buy. Happy with my choice I took it to the counter to pay. The girl examined it and tells me ” Oh this one has a chip out of it – are you sure you want it?“. To which I reply “Yes, that is why I like it“. It was not like the rest.
Travelling around any country you will always find some kind of unique sight. I live in Australia, a country with a strange somewhat unique obsession with ” big things”. In fact, we are home to over 150 random, humorous structures and statues that are dotted around the country: The Big Banana, The Big Axe, The Big Prawn, The Big Golden Guitar, The Big Beer Can, our own Big Apple are some of the more well known ones. So with this in mind, it should not have surprised me as much as it did to see what we did on this particular trip.
After attending a music festival my girlfriends and I took a road trip in a camper van from the Sunshine Coast hinterland of Queensland back to Sydney, New South Wales – the long way round – via Broken Hill – around 3000 km’s – in 5 days. Nuts.
We travelled through some very remote and err fascinating towns and places on our journey, but there was one recurring image that captivated us and intrigued us the most.
Fridges.
What’s so strange about a fridge you ask ?
Well it wasn’t so much the fridge itself. More that we were seeing them. Everywhere !
In rural Australia where its all sunburnt country and sweeping plains, a random fridge out the front of a gate or the entrance to a private remote property just sitting there alone on the grass or patch of earth, was just, well, odd. And certainly out of place.
What were they for ?
Eventually somewhere between the towns of Cobar and Wilcannia the curiosity got the better of us and we pulled over to check one out.
Slowly and tentatively we approached. The door was pulled open and my friends jumped back in anticipation of something gory or frightening being there………… nothing. There was nothing but an empty fridge.
We still have no clue what the fridge was all about but it certainly provided us with some giggles and great photo moments.
